Now that Shades Unlimited is entrenched as a second-generation enterprise with two locations, we’ve all been asking ourselves the same question recently: How Do We Grow a Custom Window Treatment Business in the 22nd Century?
In the hope of finding some answers, last month we all headed to Phoenix for a pair of training seminars sponsored by Hunter Douglas and MechoSystems–two of our best-selling residential and commercial product lines.
Hunter’s training was on tap first and was the company’s certification for Level 1 and 2 installation masters for its custom shutter lines–Heritance hardwoods, NewStyle hybrid, and Palm Beach polysatin collections. Bob, Sal, and Zach spent three days in classroom and hands-on training at Hunter’s warehouse in Gilbert, Ariz., just west of Phoenix. Zach took second place in the installer’s challenge from among the 20 or so participants in the class, who came together from their homes throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Our crew spent the rest of the week at MechoSystems’ Dealer Training in Phoenix, getting a thorough introduction to the company’s new line of intelligent motors (IQ/2) and its robust automation systems (SolarTrac and the slimmer SunDialer), reacquainting themselves with the company’s many products and options, and touring its local manufacturing facilities.
As our business and families continue to grow side by side, it’s a great perspective builder to get out of the office for a time, to take a break from the usual client focus, to reconnect with our manufacturing partners, and to meet successful dealers from around the world–not to mention to spend some time together with loved ones in a beautiful part of the country.
